Birthday picnic 2005

Today's birthday picnic was excellent. The weather broke from the heatwave we've been having, but it was sunny even so. With cooling breezes. Much nicer than last year.

Loads of people turned up, including Ian & Laurelei with baby Alex, who I have just nominated guest of honour. Even if he wouldn't smile for a photo. I blame Simon for taking his toy away.

After the picnic, five of us headed down to the Naval College for a very odd sort of interactive sound & light performance. I didn't understand any of it, but it was very pretty, and the God of Death (one of several huge puppets, lit by fireworks) was quite spectacular. There were acrobats dangling off a crane, people dancing and tumbling with flags, lots of singing, and some slightly naff lighting effects. Weird, but interesting.

I was one of the first to arrive. After filling in a form, and a quick chat in the waiting room with Tanya & Beth, I was called in to makeup. Cleo did quite a good job, though it wasn't really as natural as I'd wanted. The pale pink lipstick worked better than I thought though, and the eyes were stunning, if not very natural. She didn't do a very good job on my nails, but I'd had to cut them due to breakages so I wasn't too upset; it was a very natural pink anyway and barely showed.

Then it was over to Leoni for hair styling. She straightened my hair for me with ceramic tongs. It looked fantastic and I was really pleased with it. I think the best thing was that all the frizz was squashed down. It lost a lot of volume, but I don't mind that in the least as I have way too much of it.

I was soon off to the photographer, Dana in studio 2. She was really little & pretty and a bit scary, and it took us a while to get comfortable. But she helped me choose outfits etc. I started with black jeans and my pirate T-shirt, and we went out on the roof terrace. The first 2 photos are from there. Then I changed top, to the pvc one with chains. I didn't buy any of those photos; it doesn't really fit in the right places now I've lost weight. Then it was back to the studio, and into my black flouncy skirt and burgundy velvet top, and the greek cross (the only jewellery I actually managed to put on in all the rush). That outfit worked really well, as you can see from the pics.

Next up was the snakeskin dress. None of those photos came out very well either, mostly because I'd got far too hot in the velvet top. I changed quickly into my sea-green silk suit, then down to hair again to have it put up. I thought that would just mean bunged on top of my head with a couple of hairpins, but no. Jon-wotsit did a spectacular updo that took about 40 minutes and looked amazing. It started with a high ponytail on the second attempt (the band broke on the first - that's my hair for you), then a fishbone plait, and then I lost track! A couple of shots later, I was done.

Then there was a lot of waiting around. Beth finished first, so she had the longest wait, but I think I was next. I waited ages to be shown my pics, and ended up bankrupting myself and buying 7 of them. One isn't here because I don't like it much. Then it was a lot of giggly waiting around while everyone else got finished; Tanya, Cat, Hester, Moz, Peta, Ibby and Karan. We had a quick group shoot on the roof terrace, then we scrabbled to get changed and go and have lunch. It was 3.30pm by then! We had a lovely boozy, chatty lunch in the nearest pizza place, then people went separate ways for a bit. We (Tanya, me, Beth) did a bit of book shopping (a challenge for Beth with her huge hatbox), then walked down to the pub to meet Daryl & Co. for his "See you in 5 months" celebration. We managed to pick up a schoolfriend of Tanya's outside Forbidden Planet en route! More people joined us in the pub, including Tony, and we headed off to Zizzi for dinner. It wasn't that long since I'd had lunch so I didn't eat much, but much fun was had.

I'd really had enough by then though, and couldn't face Decadence. Tony was melting, so we made a dash for the station and home. Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!

The first three pics are from Simon Stacey's birthday celebrations at the Liquid Lab. So now you all know what the deadly enemies, the salt & pepper monster, and Brian the matchbox snail, look like! The next two are from the night of the RotK premiere. Then there are various B Movie pics. The last one is from our Christmas holiday.
